Rep. Duran Amendment to Prevent Doxxing of Public Safety Officers and Their Families Approved as Public Safety Budget Bill Passes House

St. Paul — Representative Bidal Duran, R-Bemidji, successfully passed theA18 Amendment to House File 1082, the Public Safety Budget Bill, during debate on the House floor this evening.

The amendment strengthens protections against doxxing by limiting the online spread of personal information about law enforcement officers, correctional officers, and their families. It also creates a process to request removal of personal information posted online and increases penalties when the release of that information leads to serious harm or death.

Duran, a former sheriff’s deputy, said the issue is personal. In 2018, he was involved in a traffic stop where an individual being arrested on an outstanding warrant pulled a firearm. During the struggle, the individual was ultimately killed. In the aftermath, Duran said he, his wife, and his children were doxxed.

“I know what it’s like to have your family targeted after doing your job in a dangerous situation,” Duran said. “No officer’s spouse or children should have their personal information exposed because of the uniform their loved one wears.”

“This amendment gives public safety officers and their families a clear process to get dangerous personal information removed and adds accountability when that information is used to put people in danger,” Duran continued.

The Public Safety Budget Bill passed the House with Duran’s amendment included. Its provisions take effect August 1, 2026.
