RELEASE: Rep. Jeff Backer Statement on Minnesota Supreme Court Ruling in Powerlifting Case

Representative Jeff Backer, R-Browns Valley, issued the following statement reacting to this morning’s Minnesota Supreme Court decision: 

“Today’s ruling is deeply disappointing and marks another setback for women’s sports in Minnesota. Female athletes deserve fair competition and equal opportunities to succeed, yet this decision undermines both. Allowing biological males to compete against women reverses decades of progress and discourages the young women who have worked tirelessly to achieve excellence in their sport.

I remain committed to defending our female athletes and protecting the integrity of girls’ sports. This issue is about fairness, safety, and ensuring that every girl has the opportunity to compete and succeed on a truly level playing field.” 

Both House File 12 and House File 1233 would have addressed this issue, but were blocked by House Democrats. These bills remain ready for action when the House reconvenes on February 17, 2026.
