Harder: New Law Raises Kratom Age to 21

ST. PAUL – State Representative Bobbie Harder, R-Henderson Township, announced today that legislation she co-authored to raise Minnesota’s legal age for kratom from 18 to 21 has been signed into law by the governor.

Starting August 1, 2026, Minnesotans must be 21 or older to legally buy or possess kratom. Anyone who illegally sells kratom to someone under 21 could face criminal penalties.

“Kratom is not a harmless product,” Harder said. “It can produce opioid-like effects, and we should not make it easy for teenagers and young adults to access it. This law gives Minnesota a clearer standard and helps keep these products away from young people.”

The law applies to kratom and substances containing mitragynine or 7-hydroxymitragynine, the active compounds found in kratom.

“I was proud to co-author this bill and support a practical public safety measure that helps protect families and communities across Minnesota,” Harder said.
