Demuth: “No Path Forward” For Democrat Bill to Give Rental Assistance to Illegal Immigrants

ST. PAUL, MN — House Speaker Lisa Demuth, R-Cold Spring, issued the following statement regarding the passage of SF3596, a $40 million rental assistance bill. Democrats rejected an amendment on the Senate floor that would have prevented funds from going to illegal immigrants, admitted that illegal immigrants would be eligible for the funding, and have explicitly stated that the bill is a response to immigration enforcement efforts to remove individuals living in the country illegally.

“This bill has no path forward in the Minnesota House, especially when it seeks to provide yet another taxpayer-funded giveaway to illegal immigrants,” Demuth said. “Hardworking Minnesotans are being left behind by Minnesota Democrats this session while they block policies that would help working families like no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, and a reduction in outrageously-high car tab fees. Democrats have also stated they will “never” allow the state to opt-in to a no-cost tax credit that would benefit both public and private schools. House Republicans are focused on putting back in the pockets of Minnesota families — not trying to give a break to those who have chosen to break the law.”
