Bakeberg Applauds Passage of Bill to Stop Fraud and Protect Minnesota Taxpayers

ST. PAUL —Representative Ben Bakeberg, R-Jordan, today applauded House passage of SF 856, legislation to establish an independent Office of Inspector General in Minnesota.

The bill creates a new, independent watchdog agency with authority to investigate fraud, waste, and abuse across state government. It also establishes a Legislative Inspector General Advisory Commission to help select candidates to lead the office and keep the agency independent.

“Minnesotans have seen too many examples of fraud being discovered only after the money is already gone,” Bakeberg said. “That has to change. SF 856 gives Minnesota a stronger, independent way to investigate fraud, protect taxpayer dollars, and hold people accountable.”

Bakeberg said the impact of fraud is not limited to state government. When taxpayer dollars are stolen or misused, money is taken away from the people who need it most, and families are often asked to make up the difference through higher taxes.

“When fraud happens, it doesn’t just hurt a state agency,” Bakeberg said. “It takes money away from kids, seniors, people with disabilities, and families who actually need help. It also puts more pressure on taxpayers, including homeowners already struggling with rising property taxes. Protecting taxpayer dollars is one way we can help reduce that pressure on Minnesota families.”

Bakeberg said the bill is an important step toward restoring trust in government and making sure public dollars are used the way they were intended.
