Rep. Davids’ Property Tax Relief Bill Heard in Taxes Committee

ST. PAUL – With payments coming due in just a few short weeks, rising property taxes are on the minds of many Minnesotans.
That’s why State Representative Greg Davids (R-Preston) is sponsoring legislation that would give all Minnesota property taxpayers a much-needed one-time refund.
“Homeowners in all corners of this state are seeing their property taxes jump significantly and I want to help them,” Davids said. “With residents struggling to pay the bills and with the state having the means to provide a one-time property tax refund this year, this would be a great way to put some money back in their pockets.”
Davids said property taxes have skyrocketed due to a large number of unfunded mandates that were forced upon counties during the 2023-24 session when a DFL-led legislature and Governor Walz controlled state government. He noted that counties have no other choice but to pass those costs on to property taxpayers to meet the state’s financial demands.
Very simply, Davids’ bill would provide a onetime property tax refund in 2026. Owners of residential homesteads and the portion of agricultural homesteads consisting of the house, garage, and immediately surrounding one acre of land would be eligible to apply for a refund of property taxes paid in 2026.
The Minnesota House Taxes Committee debated Davids’ proposal, and it was laid over for possible inclusion in a more comprehensive taxes bill that will be unveiled later this session.
